Nepal is a landlocked and largely
undeveloped country in the heart of the
Himalayan Mountains between China and
India. Nepal is 885 km (533 miles) long
and 90 - 220 km (60 - 137 miles) wide
with a total area 147,181 sq. km. Here
you find eight highest mountains of the
world including world famous Mount
Everest (8848 m). Entirely mountains
except for the narrow strip of low-lying
plains know as the Terai, its climate
ranges from the tropical heat of the
Terai to Alpine, Arctic and even
Mediterranean. The economic structure of
the Nepalese economy is mixed with
agriculture as the backbone. Eighty
percent of the country's total
production is dependent on the
agriculture sector, which contributes
more than 35 % to Nepal's GDP. While
Nepal has same of the most fertile land
in the world, this land makes up only 17
% of Nepal’s total area. The gross
domestic product of Nepal fluctuate
between 2 to 3.5 %. The average per
capita income is US $ 270.
Children in Nepal have become
victimized by poverty especially in the
remote areas and the low caste people.
They are much more fortunate than the
orphans and homeless children who live
on the streets. The past political
conflict had also been the root causes
for the children to become parentless.
Some children have helpless because of
their illegal birth and seduction. A UN
reports state that there are over 5,000
orphans in Nepal. In the most recent,
CWIN (Child Welfare in Nepal) report it
is noted that more than 3,000 children
have been displaced and over 1500
orphans due to the violent political
conflict in this country.
The orphan and street children of Nepal,
marginalized by society, are vulnerable
to various abuses: more often they are
also introduced to the street life,
culture of drugs and crime.
Keeping these things in mind Chetana
Nepal (CN) has extended its hand with
the well-wishers, governmental agencies,
NGO, INGO who love and respect these
kind of conditional children.
